Despite veto threat, lawmakers send bill increasing campaign grants to governor

0

By Jacqueline Rabe

State lawmakers defied a veto threat by Gov. M. Jodi Rell and voted Friday to double to $6 million the general-election grant for gubernatorial candidates participating in the state's public financing program.

The bill passed the Senate and House with fewer votes than would be needed to override a veto, but there were enough absences in both chambers to possibly make up the difference when Rell follows through on her warning. Read more

McMahon ignores GOP rivals, attacks Blumenthal over Vietnam statements

1

By Mark Pazniokas

Republican Linda McMahon's first advertising attack on Democrat Richard Blumenthal in the U.S. Senate race is a mailer that casts his admitted misstatements about his Vietnam-era service as calculated lies.

The mass mailing began arriving Tuesday, as Blumenthal and McMahon skipped a debate and left Republicans Rob Simmons and Peter Schiff to gently confront each other and two minor-party candidates, John Mertens and Warren Mosler.

Simmons, who suspended his campaign in May, arguably made news just for showing up and uttering a simple, declarative sentence: "I am running for the U.S. Senate." Read more

Simmons at debate: 'I am running'

0

By Mark Pazniokas

Richard Blumenthal and Linda McMahon were no-shows, leaving Rob Simmons and Peter Schiff to debate each other and two minor-party candidates tonight.

Simmons arguably made news for uttering a simple, declarative sentence: "I am running for the U.S. Senate."

Once the Republican front runner, Simmons suspended his campaign after the GOP convention, only to resume advertising that reminds voters he is on the ballot.

The ads, which Simmons described as "public service announcements," left Republicans wondering if he truly was competing in the primary. Read more

Just five weeks after petitioning his way onto the Republican U.S. Senate primary ballot, Peter Schiff says he is unlikely to continue propping up his struggling campaign with his own money.

His last gasp as a U.S. Senate candidate likely will come this week with an online plea for money to air commercials.

Trailing in the polls, Dan Malloy aired a television commercial Friday afternoon that tweaks Ned Lamont for his refusal to debate in the closing weeks of their campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
