Election History

He was elected in 1986 on a ticket led by Gov. William A. O'Neill. In 2008, he was cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party.         

Background

Thompson is one of the longest serving current House members. He was the first chairman of the Select Committee on Children. Thompson has been a longtime advocate for funding school lunch and breakfast programs and preventing teen pregnancy.

Thompson grew up in Staten Island, New York, part of Richmond. He joined the Marines right out of high school and served in Korea for a year.

Thompson's legislative career took a hit in 2004, when he backed his friend and long-time colleague on the Appropriations Committee, Rep. William R. Dyson, in a losing fight for House speaker. Dyson later retired. Thompson remains.

Thompson reported income from a pension, Social Security and his salary as a state legislator. His wife, Carol Shanley, reported a pension from the Manchester Housing Authority.
