Mikutel won an open seat in 1992, succeeding Republican David Anderson. Cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party in 2010, Mikutel won by more than 870 votes over Republican Michael Zelasky.
For much of Mikutel's tenure in the General Assembly, he has held two elective jobs: legislator and Griswold selectman. Mikutel was part of coalition of 15 moderate Democrats who appealed to leadership in March 2010 to close a mid-year budget deficit without additional borrowing.
Mikutel reported outside income in 2008 from the town of Griswold, where he is a selectman. He and his wife, Paula Mikutel, own a home in Griswold.They own stock in Penngrowth Energy, Penn West Energy and Wal-Mart.Mikutel filed a confidential addendum listing any debts exceeding $10,000. He declined to waive confidentiality, as allowed by law.A note on financial disclosure: Every spring, officials are required to disclose the ownership of real estate, the source of any income exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year and securities worth more than $5,000.
