Sawyer was elected in 1992 and last challenged by a Democrat in 2006, when she won 65 percent of the vote. Sawyer captured more than 70 percent of the vote while swamping Democrat Jeanne Webb in 2010.
Sawyer is a former teacher who served on the Bolton Board of Education for 12 years. She opposed a bill that would have restricted the sale of junk food in schools. She was one of the original proponents of the "Safe Haven" statute that allows young parents to leave newborn infants with staff at any hospital emergency room in the state without facing criminal prosecution for abandonment.
In 2009, she was one of nine House Republicans to vote for legislation codifying in state law the court decision legalizing same-sex marriage. She was promoted to House deputy leader-at-large in 2010.
Sawyer reported no wages in 2010 other than her legislative salary. Her husband, Eric Sawyer, is employed by El Paso Energy and is retired from the U.S. Army. They own a home in Bolton.Sawyer sits on the boards of Junior Achievement and the Bolton Land Trust.She and her husband own shares of a dozen stock funds whose value exceeds $5,000.Sawyer filed a confidential addendum listing any debts exceeding $10,000. She declined to release the addendum, as is her choice under the law.A note on financial disclosure: Every spring, officials are required to disclose the ownership of real estate, the source of any income exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year and securities worth more than $5,000.
