Nafis was first elected in 1998 and quickly made this formerly competitive district a safe Democratic seat. In the 2010 election she won 64 percent of the vote against Meg Casasanta, a Newington town council member.
Nafis was on the Newington Town Council for five years before going to Hartford. A former vice chair of Appropriations, she was passed over for chair of the budget panel in 2009 by the new speaker, Chris Donovan. Instead, the new majority leader, Denise Merrill, named Nafis to her leadership team.
Nafis lives in Newington with her husband and two sons.
Nafis reported outside income from Fitzgerald & Halliday, an infrastructure-planning firm. Her husband, Alan Nafis, is employed at Weston & Sampson Engineering. They own a home in Newington and several time-share properties.They have no securities above the disclosure threshold of more than $5,000.Nafis filed a confidential addendum listing a debt or debts of more than $10,000. She declined to waive confidentiality, as allowed by ethics rules.A note on financial disclosure: Every spring, officials are required to disclose the ownership of real estate, the source of any income exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year and securities worth more than $5,000.
