Walker was elected in a special selection called after the death of Democrat Howard C. Scipio in 2001. She ran unopposed in 2010.

Background

Walker is a long-time community activist who has blended her professional and political interests. She is a prominent advocate of returning criminal defendants who are 16 and 17 to the juvenile justice system.

Walker served as co-chair of the human services for two years and was appointed House chair of the powerful appropriations committee after Chairman John Geragosian resigned to become a state auditor. When her appointment was announced, Walker joked that she had been practicing saying "no" to programs she would like to be able to afford to fund.
