Election history: Staples was elected in 1992 to an open seat, succeeding Democrat Martin M. Looney, who won a Senate seat. In 2008, he was unopposed.

Background: As the co-chair of the Finance Committee, Staples is a key player in every debate over fiscal policy in Connecticut. Staples was named co-chair of the Education Committee in his second term, a post he held until 2002.

Staples was the majority leader of the New Haven Board of Alderman.

He is married and the father of two children. They reside in New Haven.

2008 Financial Disclosure: Staples reported outside income from Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, the New Haven law firm where he is a partner. The firm has a lobbying arm, NPM Legislative Services. He also is a part-time lecturer at Yale. His wife, Donna O. Staples, is employed by the Clifford W. Beers Guidance Clinic, which receives state funding through the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Public Health. They own a home in Old Saybrook.

They own mutual funds and Individual Retirement Accounts.

Staples filed a confidential addendum listing any debts exceeding $10,000. He declined to release the addendum, as is his choice under the law.
