Ayala was elected in 2006, unseating three-term Democrat Lydia Martinez in a primary, 707 to 454. In 2008, he prevailed in a rematch. He won renomination and re-election unopposed in 2010, and was cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party.
A Bridgeport native, Ayala teaches social studies in the city schools. He previously served on the Bridgeport City Council, including terms as majority leader and council president.
Ayala reported wages from the Bridgeport schools. He owned no real estate and no securities.He filed a confidential addendum listing any debts exceeding $10,000. He declined to release the addendum, as is his choice under the law.A note on financial disclosure: Every spring, officials are required to disclose the ownership of real estate, the source of any income exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year and securities worth more than $5,000.
