Olson won an open seat in 2002, succeeding Republican Peter Nystrom. He won this seat in the Reagan landslide of 1984 and held it for 18 years. But the GOP failed to field a candidate in the next three state elections and Olsen grabbed more than 64 percent of the vote in her 2010 win over Republican Bill Nash, giving her five easy victories.
Olson was selected in 2004 and 2005 to participate in training programs for promising young legislators. She was named a deputy majority leader in 2009.
Olson reported outside income in 2010 from Embry & Neusner. She and her husband, Emmett Riley,own a condominium in Norwich. Olson reported owning two mutual funds. Her husband works for the Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency.Olson declined to waive confidentiality and reported a debt in excess of $10,000 owed to Eastern Federal Bank. State law gives legislators the option of making the debt filing public.A note on financial disclosure: Every spring, state officials are required to disclose the ownership of real estate, the source of any income exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year and securities worth more than $5,000.
