Election history: DeFronzo was elected in 2002, unseating Thomas A. Bozek, a Democrat who became a Republican. In 2008, he easily beat Bozek in a rematch. DeFronzo was cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party.

Public financing: Each received $85,000 in public financing for their campaigns under the Citizens' Election Program. Each returned a surplus: DeFronzo, $8,893.71; Bozek, $1,393.17.
Background: In 2005, DeFronzo was the at the center of negotiations that led to the passage of campaign finance reforms that banned contributions from lobbyists and state contractors and created a system of publicly financing campaigns.
DeFronzo was mayor of New Britain from 1989 to 1993. He also was employed at the state Department of Labor and Office of Policy and Management.
He is married and the father of two.

2008 Financial Disclosure: DeFronzo reported income from Goodwin College, as well as a pension from the state and rent on a property in Stuart, Fla.. His wife, Diane DeFronzo, was employed by the Hospital of Central Connecticut. They own two houses in New Britain and the Florida property.
DeFronzo owned mutual funds and stock in the Bank of America, NSTAR and Verizon.
He reported owing no debts in excess of $10,000.

Talk of DeFronzo's taking a place in Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's administration began circulating right after the election.
