Roy worked at the now-defunct New Haven Journal-Courier in New Haven before taking early retirement from the newspaper in 1986 and beginning a free-lance writing career. He also has been a substitute teacher at West Haven High School, an adjunct instructor in journalism and communications at the University of New Haven and an instructor in post-graduate English courses at Milford Academy.
