Send to a friendGeorge C. Jepsen won the state Democratic Convention's nomination for attorney general Saturday.
The former state Senate majority leader was unopposed after the state Supreme Court ruled earlier this week that Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz did not meet minimum qualifications for the job.
"What a long, strange week it has been," said Jepsen, who cited Bysiewicz and state Rep. Cameron Staples, wishing them well. Staples, D-New Haven, had dropped out of the race earlier.
Jepsen, a former Democratic state chairman, said that as attorney general he would work to protect the environment, uphold civil rights, protect privacy and personal freedom, and defend consumers against businesses "that charge you too much or deny you services."
The attorney general, Jepsen said, "can make a real difference in the lives of Connecticut's residents."
Lindsay Carlson, project manager of the Gatekeeper Program run by the Mental Health Association of Connecticut. The program takes confidential calls from people worried about senior citizens who may need help.

THE MINIMUM WAGE
Connecticut's hourly minimum wage of $8.25 is one of the highest in the nation, trailing Washington at $9.04, Oregon at $8.80 and Vermont at $8.46.
Five of the six New England states exceed the federal minimum of $7.25. The exception is New Hampshire, whose minimum is the same as the feds.
Connecticut is one of 18 states with a minimum higher than the federal standard. Twenty-thrree are at the federal level, four are below it and five have no minimum wage.
Ten states have a minimum wage indexed to the cost of living.
